The notion of sensual art, works that encourage, rather than discourage, you to touch and explore the surfaces of the medium, appeals to me. My art installation, “Pulsating Cocoon with a Fuzzy Chair”, was created to address this issue of touchable art. I wanted to create a space where people could feel free to indulge in their senses. The aroma of cloves floated in the air; the soft voice of a woman speaking Chinese danced in your ears, exotic and sensual; translucent fabric suspended from the ceiling created walls and an entrance; a worn window pane hung over the entrance displaying flesh-colored photographs, depicting the interaction of body and touch; feather boas dangled down, forcing you to touch them as you passed into the space; a luscious, pink fuzzy chair beckoned you; beside it, a table sat holding various sensual delights for your enjoyment, fruit, chocolates, a peacock feather, a feather boa; sitting in the chair you could see a large fabric cocoon, pulsating with a red light, barely visible was the silhouette of a figure suspended within. All of this to encourage the viewer to relax and really pay attention to their body’s sensations.
